Character Descriptions:
[PREETI] Female. 30–45. Millennial, South Asian Canadians. (A Desi Dualist). English and “Hinglish” Speaking. She is the “next generation” of her culture here in Canada and she sits between her western upbringing and the South Asian roots that she grew up with. Preeti is an urban/suburban cultural bridgebuilder who moves fluidly between heritage and contemporary Canadian life. Navigating this middle-ground influences her household choices, including bringing culturally rooted flavours into modern cooking! Preeti is confident, and she owns her kitchen. She is modern, and blends traditions with today’s shortcuts. She is culturally fluent with a modern flare. Think of her as someone who has Love Island on the TV while she’s toasting cardamom. PP
[RITA] Female. 45-70. Gen X or Baby Boomer, South Asian Canadians. An Auntie. English and “Hinglish” Speaking. Aunty Rita is intrusive, opinionated and judgemental while being loving and generous at the same time. She is a cultural gatekeeper who validates authenticity, quality, and trust within multigenerational homes. Aunty Rita is traditional and family-centric. And an amazing cook. Despite her strict and blunt demeanor, Aunty Rita is warm and feels like home. She is expressive and candid. She is tongue-and-cheek, and she loves to tease while sharing wisdom. The commercial doesn’t make fun of Auntie. We acknowledge that she is simply the one that we’re all trying to seek approval from. She wants you to win, but you need to earn it so it’s real praise. PP
